이유진은 제주에 거주하며 창작, 번역, 기획, 살림, 농사를 병행하는 시각예술가다. 베를린(2010~2013)과 뉴욕(2013~2017)을 거쳐 2018년 제주 서쪽의 시골 마을에 정착했다. 그는 우연히 인연이 닿은 옛 농가를 구입해 '미술관옆집'이라는 이름을 걸고 새로운 형태의 국제 아티스트 레지던시를 운영한다. 파트너와 함께 안거리(제주 방언으로 ‘안채’)에 살며, 초청 예술가에게 밖거리(바깥채)를 내어준다. 귤 창고는 다용도 프로젝트 공간으로, 우영팟(텃밭)은 '재생(regenerative)' 정원으로 가꾸며 반려견과 닭과 함께 생활하고 있다.
이유진은 개발주의, 소비주의, 기후위기 시대에 맞서 시골에 정착한 동료 창작자들과 그들이 형성하는 느슨한 네트워크에 주목한다. 탈중앙, 탈성장, 돌봄 윤리, 생태주의적 태도는 그의 연구와 실천의 초석이며, 시골은 일상과 창작을 다른 위치성에서 수행하게 하는 중요한 현장이다.
Yujin LEE is a visual artist, writer/translator, residency curator, and caretaker of land based on Jeju Island, South Korea. She studied Fine Arts at Cornell University and earned an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University. After living and working in Berlin (2010- 2013) and New York (2013-2017), she settled on Jeju Island, where she renovated a traditional farmhouse and founded Next Door to the Museum, an alternative artist residency that brings Korean and international artists together to engage with the island's geography, ecology, history, and culture.
Confronting the pressures of overdevelopment, hyper-consumerism, and the climate crisis, Lee's practice explores how transnational artistic networks across rural contexts can cultivate alternative possibilities of creative and sustainable future. Grounded in decentralization, ethics of care, and ecological responsibility, her work repositions the rural not as a periphery but as a vital site for transcorporeal learning, being, and becoming.
